GOLOMB

dude i love this band. I've had the pleasure of seeing them twice this year while playing in good flying birds and man this is the band that is really doing it right now. just really innovative rock music. no mere indie rock band, this band JAMS and GROOVES as if they're a residential band for some lynchian roadhouse. there's hints of blues, psych rock, noise rock, a dash of proper 90s slacker and early 2000s rock, and one song even has a heavy dub.

there's a lot of weird guitar work going on here that sounds so natural. the rhythm section is superbly tight but loose in the kind of way that 60s and 70s music is. live they allow them selves to really explore the jam, letting songs go off the leash with sonic youth attacks. 

they released an album The Beat Goes On earlier this year and it smokes. speaking of, this is indie rock to blast green to.... the hit for me has been this song, "real power" an ode to reclaiming (or wanting to) that sweet sweet autonomy that the everyday world - chiefly work - takes from us on the reg.



I feel pretty privileged to have met these sweet folks and played with them. they're amazing hosts and have the headiest/swaggiest home. they're those kind of people who just kind of "get it". also Xenia(who plays bass) makes badass ceramics!

they're doing some wild touring soon so be sure to watch out for them.

Been listening to OM a bit while visiting my family in Alabama. I can’t pretend like I’m super eloquent these days, and certainly talking about spirituality can be polarizing for people. Personally, I’m not really sold on any dogma or spiritual doctrine. I think Zen makes the most sense to me. OM kind of hits this niche of feeling grounding and meditative. OM is one of those all paths lead to heaven musical projects.  Gethsemane off of Advaitic Songs  has been stuck in my head a lot. The lyrics are so heady. Ezekiel saw the wheel The lyrics draw from different traditions, and specifically instances where an individual was faced with the power of the “divine”. The story of Ezekiel seeing “the wheel” that was surrounded by Cheribum is really intriguing. The song takes its name from the story of Jesus at Gethsemane looking for guidance of God before being betrayed by Judas. There, he was reminded of his own powerlessness and accepts his fate. What’s happening

Currently I’m writing a lot of new music. I’ve been feeling a lot more inspired listening to music with my room mate. I came down stairs and he was listening to fairport convention, I love folk rock and I love when other people put it on. He’s also been putting me onto Wilco in a way I really hadn’t perceived before. Pointing out the intricacies of their recordings.  I’ve been trying to learn some classical and jazz pieces. Specifically, “polka dots and moon beams” in the style of Chet Atkins(but I wish I could play it like Wes Montgomery), Tchaikovsky’s “swan lake”, and the Piedmont Blues style take on “Cincinnati Flow Rag”. I’m always learning new songs these days. I’ve been teaching for a few months now, it’s been really tight. I’ve been pretty inspired by the people who take from me. Keeps me sharp and humble. Jim Nabors “Christmas Album”

Home for the holidays in Alabama. I’m one of those people that loves Christmas, the merriment, the cheer, seeing olds friends, spending time with family you don’t see; it’s pretty nice. Christmas music goes hard I’m a truther, okay? One of the staples in my family’s Christmas soundtrack is the “Christmas Album” by Jim Nabors. Jim (who grew up in Sylacauga, Alabama) was Gomer Pyle in The Andy Griffith Show. That show is my mom’s favorite, and the way that Jim Nabors’ “Christmas Album” holds a grip on my mom is wild. I HATED this album growing up, Jim Nabors has this huge voice, almost opera like? It’s honestly super impressive but as a kid I thought it was horrible. And the music has that cheap KPM records orchestral sound that is so good. Really creeping into elevator music territory here and I love it.
